We use so many products every day to get smooth and soft skin. Blame it on our lifestyle, pollution or eating habits, many people these days have dry and rough skin. A chemical peel treatment can help you improve the appearance of your skin and make it softer.

About Chemical Peel Treatment

Chemical peel treatment is done to remove damaged skin cells to give a more youthful texture to the skin. In chemical peel treatment, the surgeon applies a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin has fewer wrinkles than the old skin and smoother.

Uses of a Chemical Peel Treatment

A chemical peel treatment is done on the face, neck, or hands. Uses of chemical peels are to:

  • Get rid of wrinkles caused by sun damage
  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes
  • Treat acne
  • Get rid of age spots, dark patches, and freckles due to pregnancy
  • Enhance the appearance of skin
  • Improve the feel of skin

Chemical peeling also helps to improve areas of sun damage.

Are you an Ideal Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Generally, people who are light-haired or fair-skinned are better candidates for a chemical peel treatment. People who are dark-skinned may also get good results. However, they may have an uneven skin tone after the procedure

People who have skin sags, severe wrinkles or bulges may not be suited for chemical peels. They may benefit from other types of cosmetic surgical procedures such as a facelift, brow lift, laser surfacing, eyelid lift, or soft tissue filler.

Consult a good surgeon to see if you are suited for the surgery or not. The surgeon will also help you determine the most appropriate type of treatment for you.

Types of Chemical Peels

There are three types of chemical peels:

  • Superficial peel – This treatment improves the appearance of mild skin discolouration. It also improves rough skin.

  • Medium peel – Middle peel is a treatment used to improve fine lines, freckles, age spots, wrinkles, and moderate skin discolouration.

  • Deep peel – It removes age lines, deep scars, and moderate lines. After this chemical peel treatment, patients see a huge improvement in their skin appearance.

What Should You Know about Chemical Peels?

Consult a good doctor before you get the treatment done. The doctor will then ask you if you have any history of cold sores or scarring that keep coming back. You may even be asked to get a facial X-ray done.

During the consultation, it is best if you explain to your doctor in detail about your goals, expectations, medical history, current medical condition and lifestyle habits.

The doctor may also ask you to stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery. Understand the risks and complications too of the surgery before you decide for it.

You may also be asked to stop waxing and using hair removal products, and exfoliants one week before the treatment. The doctor will give you lotions to and a retinoid cream to prevent skin darkening.

If your doctor prescribes any painkiller, take it according to their instructions.

How is it Done?

It is a simple procedure, and the surgeon will ask you to tie your hair before the procedure. The surgeon will clean your face and apply one or more chemical solutions to small areas of your skin to create a controlled wound, which allows new skin to take its place.

What to Expect after the Treatment?

Swelling is common after the procedure. You may even experience a reaction similar to sunburn after the treatment. You may notice redness followed by scaling that will go away within three to seven days.

Medium and deep peeling treatments may also result in blisters that may turn brown and peel off. After chemical peel treatment, you will be applied bandages for a few days on the skin parts that were treated.

Doctors advise patients to avoid going out in the sun for a few months after the treatment.

Some of the possible complications are scarring, temporary or permanent colour change in the skin and cold sores (if you have herpes).

Talk to your surgeon about all the risks and complications before the treatment. Get a chemical peel treatment done to have gorgeous skin.
