Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia Surgery – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Gynecomastia Surgery

A swollen breast tissue in boys or men caused by hormonal (estrogen and testosterone) imbalances is called gynecomastia. Either both or one breast can be affected by this condition. A man can suffer from this condition at any point in life, from birth to puberty and adulthood. In most cases, the primary reason for male breast enlargement is the hormonal imbalance. Instead of living with this condition, you can now get rid of it by undergoing gynecomastia surgery. The results of the surgery are excellent making it possible for you to get rid of this problem.

Even though it is not a serious condition, dealing with it can be embarrassing and painful. While many men opt for medication, surgery is the sure shot way to get rid of this awkward condition.

Symptoms that indicate this problem

  • Tenderness in the breast
  • Enlarged glands in the breast tissue

Wondering about the causes?

Hormonal Changes – Estrogen and Testosterone control the sexual development in both women and men respectively. Estrogen is the hormone produced not only by women but also men. The male breast enlargement occurs when the production of estrogens and testosterone are thrown out of balance.

Medication – There are some medicines that often lead to this problem in men. Certain medicines such as androgens, chemotherapy, antibiotics, anabolic steroids, and HIV/AIDS medicines can cause the problem.

Alcohol and Drugs – The condition is also consequential to substances such as amphetamines, alcohol, methadone, marijuana and heroin.

Health Condition – There are some health factors that also lead to this problem. Some factors such as Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), kidney failure, liver failure, ageing, starvation, tumours, malnutrition, cirrhosis and hypogonadism (a hormonal disorder) can also cause gynecomastia.

Herbal Products –Essential oils derived from plants like tea tree or lavender, widely used in shampoos and lotions, have weak estrogenic actives causing gynecomastia.

Although gynecomastia might be cured with medication, the surgery gives long-lasting results. It is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures.  Here are the two surgical options for gynecomastia:

Liposuction–It removes fat deposits from the breast, however not the breast gland tissue.  There are fewer complications, zero or limited blood loss. Also, the distortion of the nipple is less.

Mastectomy–It removes the gland tissue in the breast. The surgery is done using minimal incisions for removing the gland tissue. In addition, it needs less time to recover.

In recent years, India has emerged as one of the most preferred countries to undergo plastic surgery procedures. The affordable cost is not the only reason. Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeons, quality care, world-class facilities and hygiene are a few others factors that have contributed to the growth of medical tourism in India. Undergoing the knife for male breast reduction in India would help you witness a dramatic change in your appearance.
